concept design by TeCe, an architecture firm established
in 1992 and known for their work in public buildings, is
also important as it shows the firm’s continuing interest
in the use of natural stone. The design team recently
won the first prize in a competition titled ‘Education
Campuses Architectural Design Competition’ announced
by the Ministry of Education. Their entry titled Urfa Sırrın
Education Campus, Şanlıurfa, 2013 uses a local limestone,
Urfa stone, as the major architectural material.
TeCe, throughout its work in Turkey in the past 20
years, has focused on local construction techniqes,
materials, color and climatic features with attention to
user needs and economic solutions. One of the more
advanced practices in Turkey designing in a modernist
idiom, they have also shown a consistent sensitivity to
environmental matters.
The Ünalan Cultural Center is located on the D-100
highway in Üsküdar’s periphery. The center, located on
a steep side of the highway adjacent to the Ünalan Park is
the only open space in this confused district. The Üsküdar
Municipality decided to demolish the previous cultural
center on the same lot due to its retrograde architecture
and structural issues. A very extended architectural
program for the new cultural center was required by
the municipality to be able to meet existing and future
