Yeni bir şeyin başlangıcı daima biraz heyecan,
endişe ve heves taşır. Natura’nın yeniden
lansmanını üstlenen ekip olarak derginin bu
yeni sayısını hazırlarken bizim de hislerimiz
bunlardı. Amacımız bu güne kadar olmayan bir
yayın yaratmaktı: Bu bölgenin mimarisi üzerine,
İstanbul merkezli, uluslararası bir dergi… Türkiye
ve çevresinde gördüğümüz yaratıcılığa odaklanmak
ve Avrasya bölgesindeki mimarlığı incelemek
istedik. Akdeniz’den Asya’ya, Balkanlardan Orta
Avrupa, Kuzey Afrika ve Arabistan’a, bu bölgelerdeki
çağdaş mimariyi önemli ve büyüyen bir güç olarak
görüyoruz. Bu bölgede son 10 yılda gerçekleşen inşaat
patlamasının uzun dönemli ve dikkate şayan bir
mimari gelişimin başlangıcı olduğunu düşünüyoruz.
Çağdaş tasarımda doğal taşın değeri konusunda
farkındalık yaratmak için çalışan İMMİB de aynı
vizyonu paylaştı. Avrasya bölgesi eski çağlardan beri
mimarinin temelini oluşturan doğal taş konusunda
inanılmaz bir zenginliğe sahip. Doğal taşla tasarım ve
mimari pek çok mimari tarzının bazını oluşturmakla
kalmıyor, hem doğuda hem de batıda yapı sanatının
temeliyle de doğrudan ilişkili.
Araştırmaya ve saptamaya giriştiğimiz, geçmişin
farkındalığı ve geleceğin taşıdığı zengin olanaklar…
Yerel gelenek ve teknikleri rehber olarak alıp,
Avrasya’da taş ve diğer doğal malzemelere dayalı
mimari, tasarım ve çağdaş kültürün, ilerici ve
yenilikçi örneklerini göstereceğiz. Yeni dönemdeki
bu ilk sayımızdaki mimari projeler Hırvatistan, Mısır,
Lübnan, Çin ve pek tabii ki Türkiye’den… Global
mimarlık kültürünü genişletmek amacıyla, bu ileri
tasarım örneklerinde taş, teknoloji ve tekniğin
sentezini detaylı olarak inceliyoruz. İMMİB’in
desteğiyle, dünya çapında çok önem kazanan
ekolojik ve kültürel olarak sürdürülebilir modernite
diyaloguna anlamlı bir katkıda bulunabilmeyi, pratik
ve eleştirel bir bakış açısı getirebilmeyi umuyoruz.

The start of something new always comes with bits
of excitement, anxiety and anticipation. It is with all
these sentiments that the editorial team behind the
relaunch of Natura set upon the task of producing this
new edition of this magazine. Our goal was to create a
publication that had not existed before, an international
magazine on regional architecture based in Istanbul. We
wanted to focus on the creativity we saw in Turkey and
beyond, to look at architecture built and unbuilt in the
Eurasian region. From the Mediterranean to Central Asia,
Balkans and Central Europe to North Africa and Arabia,
we saw contemporary architecture in these locations
as an important and growing force. The building boom
of this area in the last 10 years we felt was only the
beginning of a long era of construction and architecture
that deserved our attention.
Our partners in the effort, IMMIB shared our vision as
they found themselves working to build awareness of
the value of stone and Turkish stone in contemporary
design. The Eurasian region is the source of a great
variety of natural stones that has been the basis for
architecture since ancient times. Architecture and design
with stone represents not only the basis for many
architectural styles but more importantly is directly
related to the foundations of the art of building itself in
both the east and west.
It is this awareness of this past and the wealth of
possibilities in the future that we seek to explore and
map. With rich local traditions and techniques as
our guide, we will attempt to show the progressive
and innovative examples of architecture, design and
contemporary culture based on stone and other natural
materials in Eurasia. The architectural projects we feature
in this our first edition are examples from emerging
places such as Croatia, Egypt, Lebanon, China and,
of course, Turkey. We look in detail at the synthesis
of stone, technology and technique with the aim of
broadening global architecture culture through the
examples of these advanced designs. Our hope is that
we can with our partners at IMMIB make a meaningful
addition to the important worldwide dialogue on
modernity that is ecologically and culturally sustainable
to provide you with practical and critical insights.
