Projeler/Projects: Madrid iç mekanda kullanılan doğal taşlar beyaz, gri ve kahverengi tonlarda seçilmiş. Konut sahibinin talep ettiği ‘dış cephenin doğal taş malzeme kullanarak kaplanması’ isteği üzerine bu görüşü baş mimar Joaquín Torres tasarıma dahil etmiş. Kullanılacak kaplama malzemesinin cinsine de müşterinin karar verdiği Marble and Bamboo’da giriş kat zemininde cilalı mermer, dış cephede beyaz mermer (marmol crema real blanco) kullanılırken havuz kenarında ise white gresite de porcelanosa ismi verilen beyaz renkli bir başka doğal taş malzeme tercih edilmiş. Bina ön cephesindeki açıklıkların bambu ağacı kullanılarak geçildiği projede, bu kullanış binaya karakter ve ağırlık kazandırıyor. Proje kapsamında düşünülen aydınlatma tasarımı, konut ön cephesinde bulunan farklı yükseklik ve yüzey alanına sahip, bambu ve beyaz mermer ile kaplanan yüzeyleri ön plana çıkarırken; arka cephede ise tamamen formun yatayda çizdiği hatları ortaya çıkaracak şekilde düşünülmüş. Müşterimimar arasında gidip gelen tasarım kararlarıyla en bilindik tipoloji olan konut işlevine sahip Marble and Bamboo, mermer kaplı dış cephesinin ötesinde, çevresine yaptığı dokunuşlarla şekillenen irrasyonel formu ve önerdiği aydınlık mekanlarıyla akıllarda kalıyor. Along this linear route that is the dominant design gesture of the architecture all the façades are open to the exterior to take advantage of the views to the garden and natural surroundings. The presence of a tree in between these two individual wall frames seemingly wedged inside the building is clear proof of the architects’ intent to preserve the existing natural elements in the site as a counterpoint to their design. Marble and Bamboo utilizes several shades of white, grey and brown for its dramatic exterior as well as its interiors while implementing a rational spatial geometry. After being asked to design a natural stone clad façade for this house by the client, the chief architect, Joaquín Torres, used this request as a driving feature in the design process by taking it to an advanced level. In addition to requesting the natural stone cladding for the exterior facade the client made detailed specifications of the kind of materials that would be used throughout the building: polished mar ble for the ground floor furnishings and white Gresite ceramic for the pool terrace. In contrast to the use of marble, the gaps on the entrance façade were covered by using bamboo planks. The architects explained “This usage brought character to the dwelling and made it recognizable and sober”. The combination of marble and bamboo although not common is the hallmark of the project that gives the building its design quality. In addition to these material specifications lighting designed for the project also highlights the transformations of the surfaces of each facade. The lighting of the marble and bamboo clad surfaces of the entrance facade each at different heights and angles dominate the front façade whereas the back façade’s linear edges are highlighted. Overall the Marble and Bamboo house with its design process driven by detailed client needs and the architect’s response is an opportunity to review the nature of the architect and patron relationship as intertwined pieces of the design process focusing on the realization of a client’s vision by a logical series of choices.
