The angled double walls of Shirasu bricks extend all around the building with the only gap being a break for an upper floor window and terrace. Here the bricks are arranged with gaps to provide views out and sunlight into the building in the winter months while providing shade in the summer. The angled shape of these walls and the buildings orientation towards the south are key parts of the strategy to optimize insulation and the interior climate. They serve to drive the architectural shape of the house while aiding in the ecological design. Other ecological strategies in the architecture can be seen in the form of the house as a cone, utilizing a chimney effect to pull hot air up and out the main house cavity and a roof garden that also serves to provide thermal insulation. Despite all these ecological details, the overriding aesthetic character of the building is derived from the spare and geometric use of volcanic stone in the Shirasu bricks that are the central element of the masonry system used to construct the building. The masonry techniques used to create the bricks and bind them together on the sloped walls with mortar and pins to create a uniform surface for the building design is the key strategy used by the architects to generate the shape of the building. The added impact of the application of these bricks to an ecological design method gives the Shirasu House its architectural importance where ecology is now an accepted and almost invisible part of the architecture.
