Stone’s rough and less processed, natural state was used to emphasize the perception of mass, thickness and natural material texture. Thus, this solid masonry stone block that carries the whole building complex both functionally and physically, was the starting point of the design. Undoubtedly, architectural tectonics is the main expressive tool produced by the architecture. In this framework, the elements such as stone walls, wooden units, the light metal fringe and exposed concrete were used as the tools for the architectural concept.” The architects in this project use this straightforward architectonic approach aligning history with contemporary architecture. In their design for this Dormitory, stone plays an important part creating the foundation of the building as a stone masonry ground floor with the wooden units rising above. Overall the architecture reflects the architectural program and shows how the Ottoman housing typology found in Anatolian Turkey can be integrated into today’s designs.
