of colorful natural stones arranged in ornate patterns
creating a visual kaleidoscope of different zones
characterized by green mounds in different shapes
and volumes. On the east side of Sowwah Square
there are three main pedestrian routes that access the
commercial towers, the Galleria and the waterfront. In
plan the symmetric layout of the project visible from
the neighboring towers simply matches the symmetrical
orientation of the surrounding volumes to the square.
Angular lines in the pavement are utilized alongside
the seating elements and the façades of the buildings,
marking the edges of the site. These sculptural seating
elements have been set off precisely from the perimeter
of the site as part of a ripple effect that leaves an
impression on the visitor as if they are made of one big
piece of stone. Natural stone is the main design material
of the pavement and urban furniture continuing its use
from the surrounding façades. Thus, the façades look as
if they continue through to the ground level and into the
stone pavement.
Large green vegetation mounds that define the main
walking routes are spread all over the square, making it
easier to see the pedestrian network from the upper levels.
Marble seating elements are placed among and alongside
these green mounds, some sheltered by trees to create
cooler spaces. Irregular organic forms have been used to
design these seating elements (also for the green mounds)
that can be interpreted as an attempt to join the forms of
plants and stone.
