INTERIOR AND EXTERIORS CLAD WITH STONE EXUDE A STRONG SENSE OF STRUCTURE. These caverns and the authentic stone formations seen all around the area have been the site of human habitation since the 4th century B.C. significant as people have carved into the hills to create living spaces. The soft volcanic stones, with their easily shapeable characteristic have been used as human settlements, above and below ground level, for centuries especially in the early Christian area. Not a region known for its contemporary architecture, Avanos 5D stands out amongst the area’s topography and undistinguished town architecture. The architect Ayşe Defne Önen is a graduate of the prestigious Middle East Technical University in Ankara in 1991 and later was an awarded an MBA from LBS University in London in 1995 and an advanced architectural degree from Pratt Institute, New York in 2000. Since then, active in Turkey from a base in Istanbul she has won several awards including Arkiv Seçkisi (Arkiv Choice Award awarded by the Arkitera Center for Architecture in Istanbul) and 2010 World Architecture Community award. She today pursues her art, design, architecture and various urban projects in different scales, teaches at Kadir Has University Department of Interior and Urban Design in Istanbul and works on architectural projects at a.defne önen architecture Istanbul atölye d4. With the Avanos 5D, Ayşe Defne Önen has created a ‘primary architectural structure’ with a method of ‘addition’ as opposed to the area’s general method of subtraction from the stone substrate, which defines Cappadocia and its distinctive geography and spatial characteristics. In her architectural strategy Önen aims to connect the existing topography of Avanos with her drive to create a contemporary architectural language. In this way she utilizes Cappadocia’s geomorphologic and spatial characteristics as a basis for the Avanos 5Ds form and choice of material. Situated in a residential area of Avanos town, the siting for the Avanos 5D complex was determined by the imminent construction of a bus terminal for visitors right next to the complex. Alongside the bus terminal, Avanos 5D aims to provide a vibrant public space, increasing access as well as commercial opportunities in the area while creating an architecture tied to local, regional factors with an eye towards the globalism of the tourism industry. Originally planned to be built and sold in units, the Avanos 5D complex is composed of five flexible, open, free-standing and connected polygonal volumes allowing for the realization of different functions, easily adapted according to the owner’s needs. These five main ‘stone’ towers composed as a series of free standing walls, fragmented and interconnected, organizes the interior and exterior spaces. The structural grid of these walls is sited adjacent to the highway on a northsouth axis next to Avanos National Park. Various service volumes are added on parts of these primary polygonal masses whose surfaces are punctured by small window gaps in the stone system of the façade by an inventive system of stone boxes built inside the infill of these large gaps in the reinforced concrete structure. Despite being constructed from reinforced concrete, the continuous stone cladding of the exterior and interior gives the 102 NATURA • MART-NİSAN / MARCH-APRIL 2011 AVANOS.indd 6 4/11/11 6:35 PM
