A rich material palette, employing unique woods, marbles, artisanal metals, and subtle lighting for an immersive, sensory environment, defines the sleeping areas. Veiled partitions filter daylight and define the veranda areas, which feature casual banquettes and chaises longues lining the window aperture for a casual lounging environment in the busy center of the city. Throughout the guest rooms, the modern and the traditional mix in complementary, contrasting ways; artisanal materials are blended with modern finishes to recall historical motifs. The lighting concept creates a sense of layered light veils, soft glows of ambient translucence, which create an environment of subdued tones and tactile brilliance. In this way, the material and lighting palette of the rooms is developed to embellish a sense of authenticity with a display of refined modernity tinged with local traditions. The use of craft and local materials was seen in its most sophisticated form in the hotel’s Espa Spa. Inge Moore and Nathan Hutchins of Hirsch Bedner Associates, the global hospitality design firm from London were commissioned to design the Espa Spa in the Edition. The Istanbul Edition striving to provide a unique Istanbul experience giving freedom to The Gallery, HBA’s London studio led by Moore to be creative and expressive with their design resulting in a memorable space. A mood of lavishness and opulence pervades the spa, which is decorated in rich metallic woods and embossed bronze floors softened by upholstered walls and comfortable seating. Spread over three floors, this astonishingly large 20,000 square foot spa with dark and opulent lighting, and dark materials, such as rich metallic woods, embossed bronze floors and walls upholstered in exquisite horsehair makes for a truly extensive design atmosphere. The play of light was one of the main components in the design inspiration of Hirsch Bedner Associates and was drawn from the faceted cut out patterns found in a traditional Turkish hammam. A neutral tone color scheme was applied throughout the ESPA spa to relax the clients and provide a tone of luxury; opulent chocolate brown marble and cast bronze sinks create a deep sense of calm and warmth throughout the hamam. In the neighboring pool area onyx marble was used to create an expansive lighting feature using onyx panels arranged in fan a pattern.
