THEMED GUEST ROOMS The designs of the rooms are meant to provide a personal space that transports the guests to surreal settings, worlds filled with lost customs, history and carnivals, where fictional characters and magic exist, and fairytales are real. The rooms are consistent in square-meters and design, but the art differs along the themes of Karagiosis, the evil eye, and the postcards. One or two pieces of design furniture lie in the otherwise plain, yet quirky rooms, where one of the 3 themes grabs attention. The Karagiosis figures are carved and covered with gold, and mounted over orange, pink or gray vinyl/PVC wallpapers. The figures are replaced with glass-made evil eyes in various sizes, or plastic postcards with printed historical photos of Athens in the rooms that display the other themes. Light-colored solid bamboo floors and desks accommodate the Campanas’ signature design Favela chair, as well as a ladder-turned-chair (in the superior type rooms) facing an amorphouslyspread, double-sided mirror that rises from floor to the ceiling and resembles funky carnival mirrors. The jagged shape of the mirror lets the Campanas amplify the perception of space in the room, and acts as a separator of the bedroom and the bathroom. The washbasin of the bathroom connects to the other side of the mirror, and its design follows up the idea of fragmented pieces of favelas and other objects shaping the interiors of the hotel. The washbasins appear as “fragmented rocks,” uniquely designed by the collaboration of architects and designers. The bases of the washbasins are made of polyester, and the bowls, CAMPANA KARDEŞLER YENILENEN OTELIN ESKI EŞYALARINDAN PARÇALARI ÜNLÜ ‘FAVELA’ SANDALYELERINDEKINE BENZER ŞEKILDE DEĞERLENDIRIYORLAR. The public bathrooms of the hotel are covered with elegant inspiring onyx stones. The Campanas, who with their fresh look on mundane everyday objects prove how life is full of art, whether it rises from urban kitsch or in contact with nature, express this view in the form of New Hotel. Yet, they emphasize that they didn’t want to solely make a Campana hotel, but made use of Athenian elements and shared the design with other collaborators. “The experience was one of the richest experiences in our lives,” reveal the Campanas, “...and sharing was the great beauty of this experience.” MİMAR/ARCHITECT: Humberto & Fernando Campana YER/LOCATION: Atina, Yunanistan / Athens, Greece YIL/YEAR: 2011 PROGRAM/PROGRAMME: Şehir Oteli / City Hotel MALZEMELER/MATERIALS: Dönüştürülmüş ahşap, siyah mermer, doğal (ağaç kabuğu) duvar kağıdı / Reclaimed wood, black marble, natural (bark) wallpaper OTURMA ALANI/FLOOR AREA: 450 m2 TEMMUZ-AĞUSTOS 2011 / JULY-AUGUST 2011 • NATURA 73
