Natural stone, creating a visual and textual link between the old and the new
building, also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for passers-by in the
pedestrian area. Additional stone elements provide other highlights in the small
square in front of the museum entrance paved in black basalt stone. Carefully
designed steps in this square give character to the area allowing people to
sit and use the public space, a rare area of repose in this hectic part of the
city. A shallow pool designed on the Bosphorus façade spatially separates the
building from the busy traffic while strengthening the visual link between the
museum and the pedestrians on the shoreline. Thanks to the specially designed
nighttime lighting of the museum, its impressive collection can be seen by boats
passing by on the Bosphorus.
The Istanbul Naval Museum distinguishes itself from numerous other new
tourism facilities and private museums lining the Bosphorus Strait with its
distinct and strong “late modern” architectural style. As a contemporary cultural
center, the building also offers a museum experience for Istanbulites that is out
of the ordinary. Despite many technical and bureaucratic challenges, the final
design facilitates an important role for culture in its immediate surroundings
as well as rest of the city. While there has been some criticism of the narrow
scope of the museum project only referring to Ottoman naval history rather than
reflecting the larger relation between Istanbul and the sea, The Istanbul Naval
Museum public presence is a meaningful addition to Istanbul’s cultural sphere.
