Established tree canopies create opportunities for partial to full shade gardens .
This garden celebrates the plant communities found within the partial shade and full shade environments . The Florida azalea and turk ’ s cap will offer structure and height , creating a backdrop for the massing of the taller and coarse textured sensitive fern , the grass like foliage of the blue eyed grass and the lovely tubular red flowers of the Indian pink . Layering the plants and allowing for the taller plants to be placed in the background ensures that the smaller woodland perennials do not get lost amongst the larger plants . The ebony spleenwort brings a loose , upright fern into the mix of lower growing border perennials , including the woodland phlox and coral bells .
* Larger companion plant material could include live oaks , magnolias , sabal palms , American hollies and dwarf sabal palms . The larger plant material is not included in this selected garden mix , but could be incorporated if desired .

* Partial shade and partial sun refer to areas of your garden that receive between four hours and six hours of sun each day . If your plant calls for partial shade , it will do better at the lower end of this sun exposure scale . Full shade refers to areas in your garden that receive fewer than four hours of sun each day . Most plants that call for full shade will grow faster and flower better if they receive at least two hours of direct sun . |
