The error of more than 100 km further hampered rescue efforts, moments before the plane crashed into the Andes they transmitted wrong information about their location, mistake that also make them fall. The Fairchild's vision of the surroundings was really limited by the fog, the decline began by the mist of a storm developing while they were still on the mountains. The altitude dismisses 1000 m believing that way they could see more. At that point the Fairchild entered a cloud and began to shake. The series of declines caused the plane to lose more altitude by almost 1500 m, nearly touching the peak of the mountain.

The first time this aircraft flied was the 24th of November of 1955. Fully pressurized and air conditioned interior. High wings allowed room for unusually large windows with unobstructed views for passengers. Other conveniences: the cabin door had six integrated steps. Carry-on luggage racks. Bags in the hold unloaded quickly through a large ground-level door. Auxiliary power unit provided air conditioning on the ground without outside power carts.
