TIERRA JOLLY Board of Education Member
Washington , D . C .
Tierra Jolly was elected to the State Board of Education in July 2014 , in a special election . She is currently a faculty member at her alma mater , Bishop McNamara High School . Before returning to Bishop McNamara , she taught civics , economics , U . S . history , and remedial social studies at Sarah T . Reed High School in New Orleans , Louisiana , and seventh-grade ancient history at Kramer Middle School in Washington , D . C . Jolly currently teaches freshman government and AP U . S . history . Jolly earned a bachelor ’ s degree in theatre arts from McDaniel College , and a master ’ s in U . S . and public history from American University . She is currently a doctoral candidate in 20th century U . S . history at Tulane University ; her dissertation explores the relationship between national civil rights organizations and the District of Columbia ’ s movement for home rule and congressional voting representation .
JEWELL JONES City Councilman
Inkster , Michigan
At 20 years of age , Jewell Jones made history when he was sworn in in November 2015 as the youngest person to ever sit on the city council of Inkster , Michigan , a town nestled on the outskirts of Detroit . Jones , who represents the city ’ s 4th District , is also a full-time student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn . A lifelong resident of Inkster , Jones began dabbling in local politics at the age of eight , volunteering at his church and the community at large . Prior to winning the council seat , Jones worked on political campaigns for Michigan State Sen . David Knezek and Inkster ’ s Mayor Hilliard Hampton . On top of majoring in political science and finance , Jones is involved with several on-campus organizations , including the Army ROTC , Black Student Union , and Student Veterans Association . Jones is committed to changing the demographics and culture of the city ’ s police department through vetting police recruits more thoroughly . Councilman Jones is passionate about engaging youth in politics and all aspects of the community in an effort to build a more sustainable community culture for all .

Representative Shevrin Jones is a senior research specialist of administrative operations at the Broward sheriff ’ s office , as well as the director of expansion for City Year . Jones serves as founder and chairman of L . E . A . D Nation , a youth leadership organization , and the South Florida Youth Summit . Jones was a dual enrollment instructor at Florida Atlantic University School , where he taught AP high school chemistry . He also spent six years as a high school teacher in the Broward County public school system . Jones is a past member of the School Board of Broward County Diversity Council , the Eckerd Youth Alternatives Committee , the Executive Planning Committee for the South Florida Youth Summit , and the Urban League of Broward County ’ s Young Professional Network , and is a current member of Leadership Florida . Jones is a graduate of Florida A & M University , where he earned a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology .
