STEVE PHILLIPS PowerPAC+ Steve Phillips is a national political leader, civil rights lawyer, and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. Active in political and social change for 30 years, in 1992 he became the youngest person ever elected to public office in San Francisco. He went on to serve as president of the San Francisco Board of Education, where he authored pathbreaking legislation making San Francisco the first school district in the country to incorporate books by writers of color into the required reading in the literature curriculum. He is the co-founder of PowerPAC.org, a social justice and advocacy organization that conducted the largest independent voter mobilization efforts backing Barack Obama, Cory Booker, and Kamala Harris. In 2014, he was named one of “America’s Top 50 Influencers” by Campaigns and Elections magazine. Phillips holds a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law and a B.A. from Stanford University. 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Skills Workshop Series Entrepreneurship in Elected Office Industry 1 Entrepreneurs are the drivers of tomorrow’s innovations and integral to creating a thriving economy. Starting a business is a way to support and stay connected to your community, and a creative means of employment while serving in public office. In this session YEOs will learn and share best practices for designing, launching, and running a new business while in elected capacity. ANGIE BUHL O’DONNELL South Dakota State Senate State Senator Angie Buhl O’Donnell represents Sioux Falls in the South Dakota State Senate. In 2010, Buhl O’Donnell made history by becoming the youngest woman ever elected to the South Dakota State Senate. In her first term in the legislature, as part of a 5-30 minority, she fought for a variety of social justice issues, including women’s rights, LGBT rights, workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, and a fair and open redistricting process. Buhl O’Donnell currently works as the executive director of a youth advocacy organization, serves as an associate for firm Badlands Strategies, and has consulted with a variety of nonprofits, including pro-choice organizations.
