YEO NATIONAL CONVENING 2016 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Skills Workshop Series Political Communications and Digital Organizing Industry 1 A good policy is only as effective as its communication strategy. In this session YEOs will learn best practices for enlisting new media and mobilizing supporters to message effectively and advance their policy goals. RACHEL CAMPBELL 270 Strategies Rachel Campbell is a senior digital project manager with 270 Strategies. Prior to joining the 270 team, she worked at a Chicago-based political media firm where she provided digital, communications, and media production expertise to a range of clients nationwide. Previously, Campbell worked in communications for her state party, where she introduced digital programs into the outreach efforts of a diverse group of legislators across Illinois. Campbell has extensive experience in political campaigns at the state and federal levels, starting as a Congressional field organizer and most recently as a campaign manager on a state senate race. Campbell is passionate about digital engagement, social justice, and gender equality. She’s a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and loves Beyoncé, brunch, and fantasy football. She lives in Chicago with her husband, Steve, her daughter, Lily, and their sassy cat, Faye. Running for Higher Office Industry 2 Whether you’re seeking a seat on the local school board or a term in U.S. Congress, running for office is a challenging endeavor. Being successful requires careful attention to detail, a rigorous schedule, and a lot of volunteers who believe in you. This session will share personal reflections and best practices from other young elected officials who have taken the leap of running for higher office. BEN ALLEN California State Assembly On November 4, 2014, California state senator Ben Allen was overwhelmingly elected to represent the 26th Senate District. He was selected as a freshman senator to serve as chair of the Senate’s Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments as well as the state legislature’s Joint Committee on the Arts. Allen is a former board member, and former board president, of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. He is also an attorney with the law firm of Richardson & Patel LLP and is a lecturer at UCLA Law School, where he teaches education law and policy. Allen also served on the executive board of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association and was the chair of L.A. County’s Committee on School District Organization. Allen has degrees from Harvard, Cambridge, and UC Berkeley, and is fluent in Spanish. DETAILED AGENDA 11
