JAMES POVIJUA National Domestic Workers Alliance
James Povijua is a National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) staff member and the
Illinois Domestic Workers Bill of Rights campaign director. As campaign director he has
built a broad coalition of community groups, faith based organizations, and worker-driven
organizations to advance legislation that supports domestic workers in Illinois. Currently,
he supports the Illinois Domestic Workers Bill of Rights coalition which has spearheaded
the passage of legislation that, when passed, will remove the exclusion of the state’s domestic
workers from basic employment protections. He also supports domestic worker organizing
among NDWA’s Illinois affiliates and allies. Povijua has 10 years of professional experience
in organized labor, community organizing, and public policy. From working with lawmakers
to champion new legislation to building strong coalitions that lift up grassroots leaders,
he is committed to empowering workers to create important social change within their
professions and their communities.
BRISHEN ROGERS Temple University
Brishen Rogers is an associate professor of law at the Temple University Beasley School of
Law, where he teaches torts, employment discrimination, and global labor law. His current
research focuses on the influence of new technologies on work, social mobilization, and
democracy. His recent essay The Social Costs of Uber considered the costs and benefits of the
“car-sharing” service Uber. Another forthcoming article, entitled Employment Rights in the
Platform Economy: Getting Back to Basics, develops the legal case for treating Uber and Lyft
drivers as employees. Prior to law school, Professor Rogers spent five years as an organizer,
including with SEIU’s “Justice for Janitors” campaign. He has founded and edited two
online journals, one at the University of Virginia and another at Harvard Law School. He
has also taught international labor law as part of Harvard Law School’s Institute for Global
Law & Policy.
DORIAN WARREN Roosevelt Institute
Dorian T. Warren is a fellow at the Roosevelt Institute, an MSNBC contributor, and board
chair of the Center for Community Change. A scholar of inequality and American politics,
