MARY KINGSTON ROCHE Coalition for Community Schools
Mary Kingston Roche is the director of public policy for the Institute for Educational Leadership ’ s ( IEL ) Coalition for Community Schools . She leads policy and advocacy efforts to promote the community schools approach at federal and state levels . She also manages the Coalition ’ s relationships with its over 100 national partners . Before coming to IEL , Roche was manager of government relations for the National Association of Secondary School Principals , where she represented our nation ’ s secondary school leaders . She began her career teaching 6th and 9th grade English for three years in Oakland , California . She received her M . P . P . from Duke University and a B . A . in English from Boston University , where she also competed on the Division I women ’ s track and cross-country teams . Roche is a proud alumna of IEL ’ s Education Policy Fellowship Program and is on the board of education for Prince George ’ s County , Maryland .
MELISSA MITCHELL Federation for Community Schools
Melissa Mitchell is the executive director of the Federation for Community Schools , a statewide network that amplifies the voice and abilities of community schools across Illinois . In her role , Mitchell builds a network of community school practitioners to support each other ’ s work and advocate for public funding and policy support for community schools . She also provides technical assistance and support to communities starting to develop this work . Mitchell sits on several state-level councils , including the P-20 Council and the Illinois Attendance Commission . Prior to joining the Federation , Mitchell was a community school resource coordinator . She holds an M . Ed . from DePaul University , and a bachelor ’ s degree from Dartmouth College .
