YOUNG ELECTED OFFICIALS 56 Joey Luiz Mayor Clearlake, California Joey Luiz was elected to the Clearlake City Council in 2010. Previously, he was the past president of the Clear Lake chamber of commerce, a local winery business manager, and he served on the board of directors for the Clearlake Oaks-Glenhaven Business Association. Luiz was elected mayor of Clearlake in December of 2011. Maria G. Machuca School Board Trustee Mecca, California School Board Trustee Maria Machuca received a BA degree in social science and an MPA from California State University, San Bernardino. She currently serves her community at the Mecca Family & Farmworker’s Service Center as a community program specialist for the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services. In 2004, she was appointed by the board of supervisors to chair the Mecca Community Council. In 2008, she ran for the Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees and was elected with 78 percent of the votes. In 2012, Machuca ran unopposed and will serve another four years. In her spare time, she volunteers for the Sacred Heart Food Bank, where over 500 families are provided with food baskets once a week. She has organized several health fairs and community events, including the Fiesta Campesina Health Fair, Dia Del Nino Resource Fair, Mecca’s Desfile de Luces, Festival de la Una, Día de Los Reyes Magos Toy Event, and many more. @Meccapanther Karina Macias City Council Member Huntington Park, California City Council Member Karina Macias was elected to the Huntington Park City Council in March of 2013, becoming the youngest person ever elected in the city at the age of 25. Macias grew up in Huntington Park as an only child of immigrant parents. In the council member’s short time in office, she has aided small businesses, facilitated a social skills class for autistic children, and passed a resolution to reduce class sizes in schools. Aside from serving on the council, Macias works with the Sisters of St. Joseph as an associate justice coordinator where she provides educational information on various social justice topics. She is also the co-chair of the Southern California Partners for Global Justice. Tony Madrigal City Councilman Modesto, California Tony Madrigal serves on the Modesto, California City Council. He represents District 2. In his position, Madrigal focuses on jobs, safety, and the community.
