Terry Riley City Councilman – Kansas City, Missouri Recent Occupations First Year Elected Former School Board Member 2000 Councilman Terry M. Riley was first called into an elected office at the Kansas City Missouri School District after high school. At the time, he was the youngest board member on record. During his tenure on the school board, Riley pursued a vacant seat in the Kansas House of Representatives and won in a landslide victory. As a State Representative, he passed an amendment to stop racial profiling and continued to address the needs of the community in the areas of education, health care, and economic development. He is a former board member of the National League of Cities (NLC) and is currently serving on the Advisory Board for NLC. Councilman Riley is also member of the International and Immigration Task Force Committees for NLC. Since becoming a member in 2003, he has ascended the ranks from Second Vice-President, to President-Elect, and is currently serving as President of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), an NLC constituency group. Carl Sciortino State Representative – Medford, Massachusetts Education Recent Occupations First Year Elected B.S. Tufts University Manager at Fenway Community Health Center 2004 Carl Sciortino is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Sciortino serves on the Joint Committees of Transportation, Public Health, and Community Development & Small Businesses. Now 28 years old, he was first elected in November 2004 as an openly gay man after defeating a conservative Democratic incumbent. Prior to serving in the legislature, he worked in the public health field as a research manager at a community health center specializing in HIV/AIDS. Sciortino graduated with a degree in Biology from Tufts University. He is a member of the Progressive Democrats of Somerville, Mass NOW, the Sierra Club, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. David Schapira State Representative – Tempe, Arizona Education Recent Occupations First Year Elected B.A. George Washington University Teacher, Legislative Aide 2006 David Schapira is the youngest member of the Arizona State Legislature at 26. Schapira served as an Arizona public high school teacher, as an aide to U.S. Senator Tom Daschle in Washington, D.C. and as manager of Terry Goddard's successful 2002 campaign for Arizona Attorney General. In 2003, Schapira founded a consulting business, Democracy Online Campaigns, designing websites and communication strategies for campaigns and small businesses across the country.
