Cover Photo: Southern double collared sunbird Encompassing spectacular mountain and ocean scenery, the Cape Floral Region is one of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites and contains some of the richest plant biodiversity in the world. Although the Cape Floral Region represents less than 0.5% of Africa’s land, it is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. The diversity, density and endemism of its plant species are among the highest worldwide, and it has been identified as one of the world’s 18 biodiversity hot-spots. The past year has been one of growth for the National Consumer Tribunal as it continues to meet the needs of South Africa’s diverse population. It is fitting, therefore, that the fauna and flora of the Cape Floral Region, with its huge diversity and myriad of growing species, illustrate the pages of the Tribunal’s 2011 annual report. We acknowledge with gratitude permission from Maarten Groos and “farm 215 nature retreat” to make use of its information and photos of fauna and flora of the region.
