A Note From the Officers

We are so excited to present the 2023 National Classics Week packet ! This year ’ s packet focuses on examples of classical reception , a field of study within the classics that explores how different people in different periods have understood , interpreted , and used the ancient world . Building on the idea that “ meaning is always realized at the point of reception ,” scholars studying classical reception examine how and why ideas or objects from the ancient world resurface elsewhere , either in history or today . What significance does the classics carry , and what meaning might it impart ? We invite you to explore the various samples of classical reception contained in this packet , while considering what the classics means to you in this present moment .
Each day will also include a couple of ideas for activities , service projects , and more — ideas which you are welcome to use in organizing chapter activities , or perhaps simply when planning with a friend . We look forward to seeing how you will celebrate National Classics Week — and what else you will create ! We hope you enjoy !
