These seemingly brand new technologies were not only the subject of mythical fantasies but also of real-life inventions for the Greeks . Ctesibius created numerous machines that acted on their own with the help of engines fueled by pressurized air . Around the same time period , Heron of Alexandria developed countless designs for devices that seem to act on their own . Some of these include a pipe organ powered by wind , an automatic vending machine and self operational puppet play with music . Even earlier , in 400 BC , Archytas , a Greek mathematician , created a bird powered by steam , and in 300 BC , Philon of Byzantium created an automatic maid : a life-sized metal woman that poured the perfect mix of wine and water . Greek mythology and technology provided the very first foundations for robotics and artificial intelligence , paving paths that have reached extraordinary heights in the modern world .
