produced a beautiful family for the two of them , including their children , Captain Mickey Shelton II and Dedra Ann Shelton , their grandchildren , Heidi , Harper and Hudson , and a wonderful son-inlaw , Jake Klotzbach .
An unfortunate consequence of working in the trailer industry is that the NATDA Trailer Show happened to fall on the Sheltons ’ anniversary , something that began to gnaw at Mickey .
“ I always ran into other dealers that were friends of mine and they were always with their husbands or wives . I always thought it was neat ,” he remembered . “ One year , I finally asked my wife if she would . Now , we ’ ve made it a tradition .”
The anniversary trip usually begins a day prior to the show and ends a day after so the couple can enjoy the sites of the city or the towns on the way there . Many of the cities where the NAT- DA Trailer Show takes place are cities that Mickey has personal connections with as well . He went to college in Louisville , grew up in Indianapolis and now lives close to Nashville . The two often set aside time for fun adventures as well , such as a gondola ride in Indianapolis or their horse-and-carriage trip through the streets of St . Louis .
“ My favorite was Indianapolis ,” Mickey remembers . “ What made it special was I was able to show my wife where I went to high school , places I worked , world-famous restaurants and the Indianapolis Indians baseball team . That night , they had fireworks at the stadium , which we could see from our window . I told her I had done that just for her .”
While a company business-trip-turned-anniversary may seem unconventional to some , Michelle enjoys the trip .
“ She says it gives her a greater appreciation for what I do for a living . It not only brings us together but also grows our family with new friends in the industry . It also gives her a break to relax and relieve stress , as well as give me some ‘ Married Man Points ’ ( MMPs ) and keeps me out of honey-do lists for a few days .”
Whether his first interaction on a job interview , his love-at-firstsight meeting at a honky tonk , or his story in this publication , Mickey Shelton seemingly leaves an impression wherever he goes . His and Michelle ’ s story now boasts almost thirty years of marriage and , this year , they celebrate their 29th anniversary at the 2021 NATDA Trailer Show in their home-state of Tennessee .
Though he would not share at the time of this writing , Mickey surely has something great planned for their trip to the Music City . He is , unfortunately , tight-lipped about his surprise .
