Wilson ’ s doing something right . His team recently moved into a larger facility to accommodate the dealership ’ s steady growth . While 80 % of renovations of the now 3-acre lot are nearly complete , Wilson still has improvements to make . However , with the increase in trailer demand , Wilson ’ s put those on hold to focus on his biggest asset - customer service .
Wilson shared , “ I ’ ve got three simple rules . Firstly , I ’ m going to treat you the way I want to be treated . Secondly , I ’ m not going to lie to sell you a trailer . Lastly , when I put my head on the pillow at night , I ’ m going to have a clear conscience because I ’ ve done right by you .”
While his ‘ three simple rules ’ offer sage advice , Wilson also advises it ’ s important to find balance between work and home life . He says everyone should appreciate what they have in their business , even if it ’ s not yet where you want it to be .
“ Sometimes , I work a 90-hour week . It ’ s important to have some downtime to recharge the batteries . Recently , my wife and I took our side-by-side to the mountains . It was great ! Obviously , your business is important , but you can ’ t let it consume you ,” Wilson says .
“ At the end of the day , the customer isn ’ t buying because of how good the office looks ,” Wilson explains . “ But , if you treat the customer right while they are on the lot and you have a fair price , they ’ re going to make the purchase .”
By partnering with supportive , like-minded manufacturers , Wilson knows he can offer reliable products that keep customers returning . For him , that means working exclusively with B & W Trailer Hitches , Big Tex Trailers and CM Truck Beds .
“ I ’ m not that dealer that has six , seven or eight brands . We don ’ t want to expand so fast that , if we don ’ t make sales next week , we have to close the doors ,” he says . “ We take things a little slower and , when we find something good , we stick with it . We ’ re in it for the long haul .”
There ’ s strength in simplicity . Wilson ’ s team has found it and it ’ s resulted in a highly successful business - pandemic or not .
