The Evolution of Telehealth While the concept of telehealth services might have conjured images of The Jetsons a few years ago , telemedicine began in the 1950s when universities and hospital systems leveraged a telephone to share medical records , consultations , and even patient images . The goal being to create continuity of care for patients who reside in remote locations . NASA became a major pioneer in the research and development of telehealth in the 1960s when using remote sensors to monitor the health and well being of test animals , which led to many of the techniques and systems that are still in place today .
