VICE CAPTAINS REPORT ON NATAL NOMADS 2019 ANDREW MENTIS FOUNDATION GOLF DAY Natal’s AMFGD was hosted on 1st November 2019 at Royal Durban Golf Club. The event was a great success with a field of 148 players, (58 Nomads and 90 guests) which is a great effort in the current economic climate. Hopefully our guests were impressed by the Nomadic camaraderie and the collective spirit displayed by all our members towards raising funds for charitable purposes and “those less fortunate than ourselves”. This will hopefully attract more members to joining Nomads and already have a number of guests requesting application forms At prize-giving I requested John Cole to speak about the objectives and “THE PURPOSE” associated with Nomads Golf – and in particular the good work which we do through the Andrew Mentis Foundation. The initiative was given impetus by Andrew Mentis, a Nomad Founder Member in 1967 in Gauteng, who contributed personally to the fund every year. Monies raised are donated to a pre-selected charity that operates within each Club’s own geographical area in the form of tangible assets. Each year, every Club’s activities culminate with the handover of a donation to the selected Charity/ies. The charities I have nominated for 2019 are 1. SARDA: South African Riding for Disabled Association who provide horse riding for therapeutic and recreational purposes, at no charge to children with special needs 2. Crestholme Conservancy: for the installation of cameras to fight poaching 3. APN Retirement Home: who provide frail care and is one of the few homes that accept patients with Alzheimer’s disease. They also assist with care for conditions such as hypertension, arthritis, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke patients. The Golf Day takings along with other donations, raffle ticket sales and auction conducted by our very own Vice Captain, Johan Bothma, allowed us to raise a little over R100,000 which will be put towards our beneficiaries. I would like to again thank all those individuals and corporates that made generous donations and/or sponsorship of prizes at this fantastic day. Thank you also to Royal Durban Golf Club and Mike Jordan for all the help that went into the day’s event. A very big thank you to Stephan McClelland for setting up the prize giving table and Helen Parker for Registration, lastly to my committee and individuals that helped with the tough task of collecting and begging for prizes, which allowed us to reward players down to very last place: – Ross Alleson, Marc Feher, Greg Graham, Aryn Geekie, Gavin Brown, Janus Horn and Richard Eslick. I look forward to our 2020 event and trust it will again be a great success. Regards Chad Walters Natal Vice Captain 2019/2020
