Hill-Stead is the first architectural project of Theodate Pope Riddle (1867-1946), the fourth registered female architect in the country, an early proponent of historic preservation and caretaker of the family art collection. The Butler-McCook House & Garden is the only 18th-century home remaining on Hartford’s Main Street. It is a time capsule of Hartford’s past and the history of one family. Visitors are taken on a guided tour of the house that primarily focuses on the McCook family during the late 19th century and their artistic and intellectual interests.
