Anneli Skaar
A first generation American, Anneli Skaar (b. 1969) still holds a strong connection to her ancestral home in Scandinavia. Fluent in Norwegian, she moved to Norway from the San Francisco Bay Area, California, at 18, to attend the National Academy of Arts in Oslo where she received her BA. She is a painter, designer, and book artist, currently living in Camden, Maine.
Skaar’s paintings are primarily oils, and common themes of her work include solitude, modern day isolation, and a yearning for connection and the sacred through northern landscapes and seascapes. Very often the paintings, drawings, and prints are observational studies re-imagined to a dreamlike world, set in the twilight hours between light and darkness.
Skaar has works in many public collections, including: the U.S. Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collections; the U.N. Library in Geneva, Switzerland; the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway; Columbia University; Boston Athenaeum; Bainbridge Island Museum of Art; as well as many private collections throughout the U.S.
