Featured Artist: Michael McSorley
Mike McSorley was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Having an early affinity for art, making drawings and doodling during his classes, McSorley attended the nearby Indiana University of Pennsylvania and majored in Studio Art where he developed a desire to paint from life. He would often travel out into the countryside or set up a still-life for his study. After college McSorley added to his training by taking workshops and classes.
Color is an important aspect of McSorley's work and his lists early influences as being Edward Hopper, Claude Monet and John Singer Sargent. The playful still lifes he creates present with an analytical eye and empathy for the scenes which have garned him recognition across the northeast. He received the prestigious Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program Grants bestowed by the Washington, D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities for three consecutive years: 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2019, his talents secured him a place as an Eligible Artist at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. Notably, his creation "Eckington Korner" found its place in the Program in 2016. Similarly, "Along the Patuxent" was acquired by the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies in 2022. A recent milestone in his career was a solo exhibition hosted at The Art League within The Torpedo Factory in June 2023.
Throughout his artistic journey, McSorley has shown his artwork in numerous solo exhibitions at esteemed venues such as The Rehoboth Art League, The Art League Gallery, The Arts Club of Washington, D.C., the National Institute of Health, the Hill Center, the 43rd Street Gallery, and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Additionally, he has showcased his creations as part of a trio at the Brentwood Arts Exchange.
