The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village, a National Historic Landmark site, is the only active archaeological site in South Dakota that is open to the public. The Village’s Boehnen Memorial Museum and Thomsen Center Archeodome are among the most unique museums in the state. As a research center, it attracts historians, authors, and researchers for its cultural resources in early, pre-Columbian Native American history. For Native Americans, it is an important teaching site that showcases early Native American history on the upper Great Plains, and the contributions of those peoples to modern agriculture.
