The Avery-Downer House was built in 1842 and is one of America's preeminent examples of Greek Revival architecture. The home was constructed by successful businessman Alfred Avery and remained a private residence until 1903. It once again became a private home in 1956, when Robbins Hunter Jr., a noted historian and antiquarian, resided here. This American landmark and historical treasure was opened as the Robbins Hunter Museum in 1981 and is furnished with 18th & 19th-century decorative arts acquired by the original owners, as well as collectors tied to the house over its long history. The building has undergone extensive restoration and rehabilitation, revealing the beauty of this important Grecian landmark.
