The Mather Homestead was built by Deacon Joseph Mather, a deacon in Middlesex Parish, in 1778 during the Revolutionary War. The home became a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.The Mather Homestead Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the Mather Homestead, built in 1778 and enjoyed by seven generations of Mather descendants, as a treasured place for public education and enjoyment. The Foundation is committed to raising awareness of the Homestead’s unique history and Stephen Tyng Mather’s legacy as an important conservationist and the founder of the National Park Service.

The Camron-Stanford House is the last of the beautiful Victorian mansions that once surrounded Lake Merritt, and was the home to five influential families before becoming the first museum in the City of Oakland.
The restored home helps visitors time travel to the 1880s and enter meticulously recreated living spaces while learning about the early days of Oakland as a city. In addition, the house presents various exhibits throughout the year that focus on aspects of life and culture in the 19th century.
