The Jacksonville Historical Society's mission is to educate and inspire the greater Jacksonville community to value its history by fostering understanding of how the region's past shapes our present. JHS was founded May 3, 1929, 28 years to the day after the Great Fire of 1901 burned over 2,000 homes and destroyed a 146-block area. While initially collecting items of historical memorabilia over the years, the Society evolved to also preserving numerous endangered landmark buildings. One of these, the Merrill House, built in 1879, was moved to the current location in 2001 and restored over the next 4 years.
