Nappy Magazine Nov 2014 | Page 2

Nappy (adj): (usually of

black African hair) tightly

coiled; kinky hair.

For many centuries the word “nappy” has

always been associated with a negative

connotation. Many women feel that their

natural tightly coiled hair is not beautiful or

accepted, because of years of hearing that it

was disgusting, unmanageable, and not

preferred. As a young African-American

woman, it saddens me that the women I look

up to and aspire to be, are not confident or

comfortable with their natural roots. There

are women across the nation who haven’t even seen their natural “nappy” hair since childhood. Many women prefer to transform their hair from its naturally coiled state, to a more chemically relaxed form in order to suit society’s needs. The term “nappy” in actuality is not a negative term, but it has been embedded in our heads for so long that it is, and we subject ourselves to that. A woman’s hair is her crown and glory. And no matter how tight or loose the curls are, she should be proud of her natural given gift.

Today I'm proud to reveal our first issue to you. The Nappy Magazine team has worked so hard to bring you the best advices in natural and life style.
