10 Tips for Cyclists
Go With The Flow:
Riding against traffic on
a one-way street can be
very dangerous. Nantucket
has many one-way
thoroughfares, so be
careful not to endanger
yourself or pedestrians who aren’t expecting
you to be riding from that direction.
Light It Up: Before dawn and after dusk,
light up the night with a red blinking rear
light and a front light on your handlebars.
Reflectors on your wheel spokes are a must
as well.
Walkers Go First: Pedestrians have the right
of way on crosswalks; your bike follows the
same rules of the road as a vehicle.
Protect Your Brain!: Your head is one of
the most important parts of your body; protect
it with a helmet at all times.
Stay Off Sidewalks: When riding in the
downtown and mid-island, keep your bike
in the road. Nantucket sidewalks are small,

historic, and have hedges that block your view
from driveways and crossroads.
Sorry, No Headphones: Wearing
headphones while biking is not illegal, but
it’s not smart, as you should remain alert to
traffic, other riders, joggers, and pedestrians
using our roads and bike paths.
Use Your Hands: Use your hand signals to
let those around you know where and when
you are turning.
Look ‘Em In The Eyes: Never cross an
intersection without a wave or head nod from
a driver to insure they see you before you
cross in front of them.
Watch For Opening Doors: Certain roads
are tight in the downtown parking area, so be
aware of opening car doors.
Same Rules Same Roads: Bikes follow the
same rules as cars, so please stop at all stop
signs and always ride with traffic.
