N Island Activities Let’s focus on the varied natural history and walking tours to choose from. Linda Loring Nature Foundation and Maria Mitchell Association both offer natural history and birding walks, with the hale and hearty Nantucket Bird Club meeting at 8 AM every Sunday at the Nantucket High School. The Trustees of Reservations oversees the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge where you can explore a ruggedly beautiful coastal environment replete with deer, raptors, shorebirds, sand dunes, salt marshes and tidal Inset photo ©Michael Galvin ponds; its multiple habitats are home to an array of coastal plant and animal species. Out on the water, Shearwater Excursions will take you on an eco-friendly Seal Cruise to observe these intriguing creatures in their natural habitat. Both the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) and Nantucket Preservation Trust (NPT) lead informative walking tours that explore the timeline of island history from its reign as the world’s Whaling Capital to its current incarnation as a premier tourist destination. Tours showcasing Main Street and ‘Sconset, as well as “In the Heart of the Sea” (Nathaniel Philbrick’s bestseller and a recent Warner Brothers’ film) are also offered.
