certification for implementing the following
sustainable practices while retaining the look
and feel of the landmark bookstore:
• Reusing the Historic Fabric: Only
8% of the structure was removed to create
the new stairway and elevator required by
code. Nearly 75% of the historic horsehair
plaster was preserved, and removed plaster
was reused in the lime mortar to repoint the
interior of the brick walls. The trademark
22 Federal, home to the Nantucket
Culinary Center and The Corner Table Café,
is being reviewed for LEED certification as
well. This building was renovated to create
a sustainable, environmentally friendly foodoriented gathering place – a facility that
will enhance the reputation of Nantucket’s
downtown as a year-round culinary
destination.
