Jo McEntee learned the art of storytelling from her parents , and older family members . Listening to the accounts of their experiences , she began recounting the stories and crafting her own fiction before she could read and write , earning her the pet name Lil ’ Griot . A native Chicagoan , Jo won her first writing award at the age of nine for an essay on “ My Favorite Character in History ” ( Jean Baptiste Point du Sable ) sponsored by Chicago ’ s American newspaper . Over the years , Jo has put pen to paper to fill dozens of yellow pads and composition books with musings , poetry and stories . With the inspiration and encouragement of M-LAS and others , Jo is sharing her stories now . When she ’ s not writing , Jo curates a weekly writers workshop at the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago .
