He took another look at Lana. She leaned forward in her seat, almost at the edge, hinging on whatever his answer might be. Her eyes were tight as she squinted to focus on her objective. Her chest rose and fell, pronouncing itself with each breath she took. Yeah, she’s resisting what her body is telling her, but I know better than that. He leaned forward, making sure their eyes connected before he spoke again. He feigned hesitation in his response, but he wanted to lay his own trap, since she tried to lay one to ensnare him. “I…I refuse to speculate or point fingers at this stage of the investigation. I would be doing the authorities a disservice in their process.” “Yes, sir, I understand that, but even the current presidential candidates, including your running mate, Secretary of State Yeager, seem to be convinced that ISIS is operating inside the country. In the next moment, he simply shut down every thought, every idea that crossed his mind. He couldn’t betray Kianna. It was one thing to enjoy Lea, since Kianna enjoyed her, too; she became a bit of a pseudo-girlfriend in addition to being his top aide. He needed to get a grip on his urges, despite the unconventional nature of his marriage. Lana stood to shake his hand, doing her best to hide the disappointment on her face. The last part of his answer seemed to get to her as she smiled up at him. If she was honest with herself, she would have confessed that she had an ulterior motive when she explained to her editor that she had information to use to get an interview with the senator. He was an attractive man, and she had an unhealthy attraction to married Naleighna Kai Literary Cafe Magazine July/August 2017   53
