Chapter 1 3:47 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 “Let me get this straight,” Val snapped at her husband. “You want me to abort my baby, but some other woman you swear up and down you don’t love can walk around eight months pregnant with your child?” “You’re not having that baby,” Kurt growled, his bronze skin ablaze with anger. He took two steps forward. Val instinctively backed away, her heart performing an erratic drum solo. Two years of marriage and she’d never seen this side of him. She scanned the kitchen, calculating an escape route out the back door, but there was no way her moist palms would allow her to get a firm grip on the doorknob. He was closer to the car keys on the table anyway. Thunderous banging against the outside security door made both of them snap their heads toward the front entrance. “Police! Open up,” ordered a deep, authoritative voice. Val marveled at how quickly Kurt transformed, pasting a phony smile on his face before marching to the living room and cracking the wooden door. “May I help you, officers?” he asked through the thick glass security door. His tone was sickeningly sweet. “We got a call about a disturbance coming from this address,” a female voice stated. “You alone in there?” Judging from this resonant voice, Val pictured the man outside the door to be the size of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. She couldn’t tell for sure. Kurt had positioned his muscular frame so she couldn’t see out, which meant the cops couldn’t see in either. NKLC Magazine | 71
