February. The month of love. The month
of Black History. This year, the focus is on
little known Black History facts shared
by the contributing authors. One story
and image, though small and different
from everything else between the pages,
touched my entire soul. Recently, my
nephew posted a tattoo he had drawn
of women with butterflies strategically
placed in the artwork to tell the woman’s
story. She had been a victim of a horrific
crime and the artwork now tells a tale of
survival that is haunting. Seeing it made
me realize that Shogun’s art on skin, is
also as important as the written word,
spoken word, and artwork displayed in
museums.
At one time, our ancestors were branded
as property, and that signaled we were
owned, devalued, and now at the mercy
of those who had none. That, too, is a
story that we are still having to overcome.
The brand my not be physical but it
certainly is woven in the fabric of our
everyday lives.
Some of the articles in the magazine
tell of the triumphs of legendary figures
we recognize, but also share a few
tidbits of things that might be common
knowledge. One thing is for certain.
Everyone here leaves an imprint that
affects something or someone on this
planet. Do you know what your legacy
will be?
Enjoy!
