We plant a variety of medicinal
herbs, veggies and greens at Nākd,
which has certain characteristics,
including:
• Raised according to practices in
balance with the natural
environment, using methods and
materials that minimize negative
i m p a c t . We ’ r e c o m m i t t e d t o
replicating the ecology of the
natural environment by maintaining
biodiversity and fostering healthy
soil and growing conditions.
•Our home garden has been free of
known and perceived toxic
chemicals and persistent chemical
pesticides and fertilizers for the
past 20 years, and synthetic
fertilizers and pesticides are not
used to grow any of our crops. The
farm will now be relocated to 5acres of virgin rainforest.
• Planted on a rotating basis within
the farm system. Crops are rotated
from area to area, rather than
growing the same crop in the same
place year after year. Cover crops
are planted to add nutrients to the
soil and prevent weeds.
To care for the health of the soil, we
use cultural and holistic techniques
that help to build soil such as minimal
tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation,
and compost production. The farm
uses only manual methods for
cultivation. We use various methods
of irrigation—each tailored to
individual plant needs—including
traditional water methods, flooding,
drip irrigation, and overhead
sprinklers.
A shade house is used to produce
seedlings for our medicinal-herb and
veggie
production . All of our
medicinal herbs are harvested by
hand to preserve the quality of the
crops and conserve resources. We do
mostly solar and air drying of herbs,
flowers and fruits used to make our
Nākd Rubble preservatives. In rainy
season, a food dehydrator is used.
