Driving Entrepreneurship
through disruption
Together with her small team, Leigh sat around a
farmhouse table to talk about the challenges in the
agricultural industry: access to affordable farmland,
difficulties securing loans, climate change, pest and
disease management / crop protection, poor quality
seeds, soil and water management, GMOs, pesticides,
profit, lack of youth involvement (farmers), waste
reduction. not enough constant supply from farms and
the farmers in our communities, lack of knowledge on ICT
and marketing strategies and lack of funds to brand and
advertise farmers. Other topics that were discussed was
organic farming versus conventional farming and
escalating prices of inputs which undermine the ability of
farmers to produce crops in a sustainable manner.
“At the end of our discussion, we all agreed that our note
taking showed an accurate depiction of the challenges of
being a farmer in Trinidad, and that disruptive innovation
in the agriculture sector is the path forward for
sustainable development.”
It was decided that they and other farmers needed to
step up and fight for the future of farming as a united,
national front. “Our major focus is to foster linkages and
information sharing amongst Caribbean farmers so that
they are in a better position to respond to the key
challenges facing the agricultural sector in the Caribbean.
In a sector which became unattractive due to negative
forces we bring a new idea and product that brings
simplicity, affordability and accessibility to a larger
population. Nākd is our disruptive innovation that can
help solve the greatest challenge facing society- food
security.
We work in coalition with farmers, consumers,
organizations, and government to tackle the many
challenges that independent, and sustainable farmers
face in their first years operating a farm business.
