Spotlight on Camp One Step Bringing camp to the kids
2020 has been a year that no one will forget , and for the children and families served by Camp One Step , we hope it will be remembered as a year that camp came to them , since they couldn ’ t safely come to in-person camp programs . With the many health and safety challenges brought about by the pandemic , Camp One Step transitioned our in-person camp programs to virtual , so that we could continue to connect and support the pediatric cancer patients and survivors which we are so honored to serve . We often say that camp is not just a place , it is a community , and during these challenging times that message is truly felt by all in our camp family .
Camp One Step currently offers eleven free camp programs held throughout the year serving our children ( and a few which serve their family members as well ), and each year we provide more than 800 camper opportunities . In late December each year , we offer our Winter Camp Program , which connects teens ( 13-19 ) who have been diagnosed with cancer while they take part in fun , traditional indoor and outdoor winter activities . In December of 2020 , we are offered this critical program virtually , serving 80 teens in total .
Zooming into action What did our kids experience at Winter Camp Virtual ? Keeping traditions active was one of the many goals for the program , as well as bringing new ideas directly to campers ’ homes . Children took part in both daily online and offline activities from home , and each participant received an amazing care package from Camp One Step the week prior filled with all the supplies , games , arts and crafts materials , sports equipment , clothing and snacks needed to have an amazing camp experience . Our staff and volunteers led campers each day via zoom calls in several fun activities including dancing , a talent show , minute-to-win-it games , cookie decorating , a tie blanket activity and sing-a-longs .
The continued success of Camp One Step ’ s virtual programs would not be possible without the time , energy , planning , and passion of the outstanding volunteers and program leadership , as well as the incredible support of partners including The NAILBA Charitable Foundation , which generously helped sponsor the 2020 Winter Camp Virtual Program .
