Standards & Assessment Committee Report
The NAELPA Standards and Assessments committee works to stay current on issues in these standards and assessment as they relate to bilingual students and communicate concerns and responses on behalf of the membership.
Since the previous newsletter, the committee has been engaged in
1. Exploring the issues related to access to remote learning among language learners in preparation for informing NAELPA positions and actions. Committee members are engaged in reviewing sources in their states and districts to illustrate policies, challenges, and responses.
2. Finalizing questions for the USED about alignment issues raised through the Peer Review process.
3. Discussing additional language/dual language/biliteracy programs and requirements for alignment, both to English language development standards and to any assessments in the additional language.
We have a particular need for a NAELPA member who is working at the local district level to participate and share their knowledge and skills. This can be though regularly attending committee meetings or only attending meetings of specific interest to the member.

Committee Report
In 2017, a publication entitled America's Languages: Investing in Language Education for the 21st Century made headlines by touting the value of languages as a national interest and envisioning equal access to language education.
As a spin off of the report was the creation of a cadre of America's Languages Fellows, established In 2020. This group of distinguished teachers, administrators, and researchers who know programs with practices across the country that can serve as exemplars of access and excellence, was established to begin building The Guide to Exemplary Programs & Practices in U.S. Language Education.
Current NAELPA President, Megan Alubicki-Flick and Ivanna Mann Thrower Anderson, NAELPA past-president and Advocacy Committee Co-Chair, proudly serve as America's Languages Fellows where they actively identify high quality language programs for the guide.
