THE BLACK PRINCESS
Excerpt: Excerpt:
“Indri, Mouse Lemur, Sifaka, Ring-tail Lemur,
and Marmoset … have I missed any?” Kanida
responded after minutes of silence in the colos-
sal Dedan Kimathi Theatre where he had most
of his Zoology lectures. “The little monster tortured me for a whole semester, I did not talk about it.
Until, one day while I was walking with my friend, Aline, I decided to ask
her what bothered me most. I knew what a monkey was, I had seen them
on television shows, I wanted to know what "kala" meant. I figured that it
was probably an Urdu word because that little monster was Pakistani.”
“Yes you are right, you have done well,” responded
Professor Mukami as she delivered a warm smile mo-
tioning Kanida to take his seat. As usual, her smile
elicited endless cat-calls and whistling from the guys
in the class who found her abnormally attractive for a
professor; in fact, she was considered way prettier than
the campus’s very own female students who were prob-
ably a decade younger. This did not sit well at all with
the campus ladies. Kanida was new to the university
and now found himself smack in the middle of an inter-
esting situation where his classmates ogled over their
Mammalogy class lecturer. It was an era of motorbikes
and everyone wanted or had one. The university was
like a generator factory oozing engine sounds here and
there of super-bikes being ridden around the compound.
There had already been 8 motorbike related fatalities in
the past 3 months but that did not deter the fad from be-
ing coveted and further pursued by the campus young-
sters. It was a cool thing to have a bike, and, if you were
single, chances are that it was because you were walking
home.
