Born to Rescue

Với trụ sở đóng tại Hội
An, những nhà sáng lập
của Tổ chức Bảo vệ Động
Vật Việt Nam (VAWO),
Catherine Besch và
Emma Bolton, làm việc
với những bác sĩ thú y
địa phương và với cộng
đồng để hoàn thiện sự
đối xử với động vật thông
qua việc giáo dục bảo vệ
động vật, chương trình
triệt sản/tiêm phòng vắc
xin, giải cứu và nhận nuôi
động vật, và xây dựng
năng lực cho những
nhóm bảo vệ động vật
cũng như bác sĩ thú y địa
phương. VAWO tìm kiếm
những nơi tiêu thụ thịt
chó và nâng nhận thức
bằng ấn phẩm bảo vệ
động vật tại Việt Nam.
As they feel such
passion for both
their new country
and the animals
that inhabit it,
VAWO is prepared
to stick around
for a long time in
order to share their
contagious love of
animals in Vietnam.
y first rescue that I can
remember was a baby bunny
that my cat had caught on our
farm near Washington, DC. I was
only 4, but I knew that I had to
save this bunny’s life. The rabbit
had unfortunately sustained a
fatal blow from my cat and died
not long after I took her away
from my ravenous feline. I was
devastated, but undeterred from
continuing my rescue mission.
T
he first time I went fishing
at age 7 or so, I caught a
small fish, but refused to let it
die. I kept it in a plastic grocery
bag, named him Charlie, and
continuously filled it with water,
as the thought of my new friend
dying and me being the cause of
this was too much to bear. I tried
to convince my parents that he
could live in my bathtub, but he
eventually died in that grocery bag
hours later.
M
y parents will always regret
getting me a car in high
school because that’s when
I stopped asking their
permission to bring home
my rescues. I just did
took the animal in need
(including a pig I found
in the road) and begged
for forgiveness later as I
racked up huge vet bills
for these helpless animals
as they joined our growing
furry family. I was truly
born to rescue animals,
always knowing that if there
was a chance to save one,
it was my duty to do so.
Now that I am the director
and shelter manager of
Vietnam Animal Welfare
Organisation in Hoi An, I do
not have to ask my parents.
Now I just have to raise
funds for it!
A
nyone can be a rescuer
though, regardless of whether
you have your own animal shelter
or not. While I have years of
experience doing so and have
worked for vets that helped me
understand the process, we all
have the power to end animal
suffering and do what we can
to improve animal welfare in
Vietnam and around the world.
