Grenada , The Spice of the Caribb

The Grenada Tourism Authority ( GTA ) announced that Grenada and its sister islands , Carriacou , and Petite Martinique have officially been designated as a Culinary Capital by the World Food Travel Association ( WFTA ).
Culinary Capitals is a regenerative tourism program devised by the WFTA to put the spotlight on culinary cultures around the world , accrediting eligible destinations who will then benefit from marketing and strategic support for the next year , as they put their new accreditation to use in their destination marketing efforts .
Grenada ’ s culinary culture has been recognized because our food is firmly attached to the cultural heritage of the tri-island state . It is ingrained in our cultural practices , attitudes and beliefs based on the
staple and ancestral foods handed down by generations . This rich history incorporates our diverse ethnicity , behaviours and norms which guide how we use our food and transcends generations .
The integration of spices into Grenada ’ s cuisine has resulted in an overall robust and flavourful national food profile and the customs of food preparation are passed on through the generations through festivals , cultural events and family gatherings that feature the traditional dishes . Customs such as Cake and Flag dancing , Parent Plate and Saraka ; a ritual celebration involving food which is served at most cultural festivals , like the Maroon & String Band Festival , Tombstone Feast , Emancipation , Fisherman ’ s Birthday , or any family gathering are common throughout the sister isles .
