BARA goes beyond food . Social media posts are informative and educational , sharing snippets of the food ’ s Caribbean significance and history Food is universal ! It adds joy , nourishment , and it connects people . Food is also an integral part of Caribbean culture . We thought there can be no better way to introduce people to our culture than by sharing it through food . That ’ s why our tagline is “ Sharing culture . One bite at a time .”
Caribbean food has origins in African , Indian ( South Asian ), Indigenous , and various other food cultures , and it ’ s interesting for people to see how that came together and evolved over time .
BARA was formed to originally spread our culture to others who have not experienced our food , warmth , or our respective islands . We wanted to share as much knowledge as we can using food as the draw .

backstory behind why / how they were created . Pick a dish from any island , and there ’ s a story to tell . For example , Haiti has a dish called “ soup joumou ” that ’ s traditionally served on their Independence Day . The history behind this tradition is that enslaved Haitians were prohibited from eating this soup , as it was considered a delicacy reserved for the French colonizers . Once Haiti fought for - and gained - its independence , eating this soup became a symbol of liberation for Haitians . That ’ s an amazing story to tell , and a much more meaningful experience than just having a pumpkin soup without even knowing the weight of its historical significance .
It ’ s great to show some pictures of tasty food on social media , but we ’ re also using it as an opportunity to educate . So while someone may see a picture of food and think it looks delicious , we think it ’ s a value-add to let them know how
