Fort Beekenburg

Built in 1703 , this fort is an important part of Curaçao ’ s history .
The Dutch were constantly having to defend the island against the English and French so the fort was strategically placed to ensure that approaching enemies were not able to reach Willemstad . Overlooking the sea , the aged castle that once saw frantic activity , as foreign forces , even pirates attempted to capture and pillage , now sit unmanned , with centuries-old cannon its only company .
Proud ruins nevertheless , albeit just a dim shadow of days gone by remains atop this hill . If you visit , enjoy the stillness and of course , the spectacular view .
